February 2010

February was a very busy month for the hospital.

Professor Martyn Webster led a team of Reconstructive Plastic Surgeons from Scotland. They worked in the Hospital from 1st - 20th February and completed 54 operations that covered cleft and lip palates, burns, and contractors.

Mr Cesare Bachani led a group of dental surgeons from Italy. They spent five days from Feb 22nd - 27th and saw between 20 and 30 cases. There are no dentists in Makeni so their work was much appreciated.

Dr Aiah Lebbie was one of the original Sierra Leonean doctors who helped to set up Holy Spirit Hospital with Dr Patrick Turay. He now works as a surgeon in Cameroon, but made a return visit to the hospital from the middle to the end of February to assist with more surgery work.

Cardinal Arinze from the Vatican and Archbishop Henryk Hoser from Poland were given a tour of the hospital during their visit to the Diocese of Makeni.

The Makeni Support Fund in the UK provided the funds (around 15,000 US dollars) for a borehole to be drilled that now supplies the hospital with clean water throughout the year. This was project managed by Jonathan Kay, a volunteer at The University of Makeni. As the hospital has expanded over the years the original wells have struggled to supply clean water during the dry season.

Dr Aldo Ceresa from IRPS in Scotland, (International Reconstructive Plastic Surgery), funded the construction of a much needed recovery room in the micro surgical unit. IRPS also donated a twenty foot container of medical supplies, which was managed by Mr Alan Burns.

Tom Johnson from the USA, funded 200 Hernia Repairs. Each Hernia operation costs between 100 to 150 US dollars, and without the operations the patients are seriously incapacitated.

Tom Johnson also funded twelve operations to correct spinal disorders. These operations were carried out in Ghana and the twelve patients are now recovering in Holy Spirit Hospital.

March 2010

Bishop Semeraro from Albano Diocese in Italy visited at the beginning of March to see the progress the Hospital has made. This Diocese provided the initial funding for the hospital so it is very gratifying for him to see all that has been achieved.
