Dr. Nina Seigelstein

Dr. Nina Seigelstein (obstetrics-gynaecology) first visited the Holy Spirit Hospital in January, 2009 when she and her four person medical team surgically treated 25 women in need. Dr. Seigelstein, moved by the great need of the many women she examined, decided to raise funds to have a much needed maternity ward built as a part of the Holy Spirit Hospital. The new Maternity unit opened in September 2016.

Dr. Seigelstein returned to the Hospital in January, 2012 with another small team to treat 22 more women in need of major gynaecological surgeries.

Reconstructive Surgery

The ReSurge Africa Organization

Reconstructive-plastic-surgical teams from the Scotland based Reconstructive Plastic Surgery (IRPS), renamed the ReSurge Africa Organization, make regular visits to the Holy Spirit Hospital where they perform life-changing surgeries for impoverished Sierra Leoneans while they train local medical professionals in the arts associated with their craft.

Diabetes

Holy Spirit Hospital Diabetes Clinic

Diabetes is a global concern which many organisations including the World Health Organisation have highlighted as an evolving catastrophe. The number of cases of diabetes in SubSaharan Africa is rising dramatically and the complications of this disease (blindness, limb amputations, stroke, heart attacks, kidney failure, neuropathy, erectile dysfuntion (in men)) causes enormous suffering and premature death.
In an attempt to address these issues, Dr Patrick Turay with the support of Dr Veronica Sawicki, co-founder of HelpMadina (www.helpmadina.org.uk) launched the diabetes facility at the HSH in 2013. The clinic is held every week on a Wednesday and is run by Matron Annmarie Koroma who has an expertise in diabetes. The clinic now has hundreds of patients registered with new cases diagnosed every week. The majority have type 2 diabetes which can usually be managed with lifestyle changes, dietary advice and oral medication. Patients attending the clinic have a fasting blood glucose measurement upon arrival. They are then seen by Mrs Koroma who provides comprehensive diabetes education for every single patient. This is time consuming but vitally important. Most patients know very little if anything about diabetes. Many have consulted traditional healers Mrs Koroma examines her patients (blood pressure, visual acuity, feet for pulses and sensation) and prescribes medication for diabetes and invariably for hypertension also. Patients are followed up closely to monitor diabetes control and to screen for complications.

The clinic also provides care for around 30 children and young patients with type 1 diabetes. They must have daily insulin injections in order to live Insulin is difficult to access in Sierra Leone and when it can be sourced it is far too costly for the majority of patients. As a consequence, the life expectancy of a patient with type 1 diabetes can be as little as 6 -12 months.
The clinic is indebted to Insulin For Life (www.insulinforlife.org) who provide insulin free of charge and also to The Makeni Trust Fund (www.makenitrustfund.org.uk) for blood glucose strips.
